Nielsen awarded radio measurement extension in Norway

3 minute read | January 2022

Oslo, Norway, January 10, 2022 – The Norway MOC selected Nielsen as the independent radio measurement provider, extending the existing contract from January 2023.

The measurement is carried out on behalf of NRK, Bauer Media and the P4 group. Nielsen’s measurement reports listening to most types of audio content from the broadcaster’s stations, regardless of the distribution platform and equipment used to listen. The purpose of the measurement is to provide a representative picture of the listening behaviour of Norwegians. Nielsen’s measurement enables media buying and selling by reporting how many people listen to the various radio stations, who listens, and how long they listen. The granular reporting can also distinguish between listening places, such as at home, outside and in secondary homes, as well as in the car.

Since 2019, Nielsen has reliably delivered a consistent radio currency measurement, utilizing their 2,000 persons PPM panel. Nielsen will further develop the service as part of the new agreement, generating a deeper understanding and representation of Norwegian radio listening.

Among the new elements of the measurement is an adjustment for listening consumed using headphones, as well as an introduction of Nielsen’s newly developed wearables meters. The new service will further allow commercial broadcasters to make better use of their commercial inventory and target adverts on their digital platforms.

“Nielsen has delivered a solid radio measurement in the current contract period, with strong professional integrity and a high service level. With this, Nielsen has written a new chapter for the high ambitions of Norwegian radio to measure radio according to world-class methodologies. We strongly believe that the next period from 2023 will lift radio measurement in Norway even further “, says chairman of the MOC, Kristian Tolonen from NRK.

“We are thrilled about the outcome of this tender process where we have been measured against strong international competitors. The MOC once again has concluded that Nielsen offers the best solution for measuring radio, which is extremely motivating and rewarding after the work we’ve put in during the first contract period”, says Nielsen’s Norwegian Market Leader, Ragnhild Herlofsen.

“Nielsen has made a clear business decision to invest heavily, both in terms of resources and technology – in developing and future proofing our media measurements so we can stay relevant in the market. The Norwegian radio broadcasters are known to be amongst the most forward-leaning in the industry, and to be able to continue the collaboration with this group is truly inspiring”, says Herlofsen.

Nielsen has more than 75 years of experience globally with radio measurements and holds a large number of patents on measurement technology, including the Personal People Meter (PPM) technology that has been used to measure radio listening in Norway since 2006.
