SMH takes Top Spot in Online News Rankings

The Guardian jumped two positions to take seventh place

SYDNEY: 12 SEPTEMBER, 2014 – Smh.com.au has taken the top spot in the online news ranking for the second time this year, according to results released today by Nielsen. Latest results from Nielsen Online Ratings, which includes the aggregated consumption of site content via a mobile or tablet device through its hybrid methodology, revealed a 12 percent increase in unique audience by smh.com.au in August 2014, compared to the prior month.

The Guardian, which posted a four percent increase in unique audience compared to the prior month, also moved up the rankings (two places) to seventh position, (see chart 1 below).

News.com.au recorded notable growth in engagement metrics, up 13 percent for sessions per person and up 11 percent for time per person.

Nielsen Online Ratings data confirmed growth in unique audience for four other mastheads in the top 10; ninemsn (+4%), ABC News Websites (+4%), Daily Mail Australia (+4%) and BBC (+8%).
